When I Try to Play the Screen Comes Back to the Main Menu

Common problems and solutions for Epic Pinball

Problems you may experience with version 1.x of Epic Pinball

Problems you may experience with Version 2.0 of Epic Pinball

Problem: I have Windows 95/98 and when I select "Play Game" the screen returns me back the main menu.

Solution: Some of the tables in Epic Pinball require more memory than others. If you select a table and the screen blacks out and returns to the pinball menu, you will need to free more conventional memory. Below is a brief outline on how to free more conventional memory for Windows 95/98 users:

1. Right click your mouse on a empty area of your desktop. Choose "NEW" and then "SHORTCUT".
2. Enter the path of your pinball executable (ex. C:\EPICPIN\PINBALL.EXE) in the "COMMAND LINE" box and then click on the icon labeled "NEXT".
3. Enter a name for your "SHORTCUT" and click on the icon labeled "FINISH".
4. After your "SHORTCUT" has been added to your desktop, right click on the icon and select "PROPERTIES".
5. Click on the "PROGRAM" tab and go to the "ADVANCED" section.
6. Under the "ADVANCED" section, select "MS-DOS mode," and "Warn before entering MS-DOS mode".
7. Next, select "Specify a new MS-DOS configuration".

Here is an example of a CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT for your DOS mode shortcut.

   CONFIG.SYS
   ==========
   Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.Sys
   Device=C:\WINDOWS\Emm386.Exe NOEMS
   DOS=HIGH,UMB
   DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\TOSHIBA.SYS /D:MSCD000 /N:1 /P:220

   AUTOEXEC.BAT
   ============
   SET PROMPT=$p$g
   SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6 E620
   SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
   LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000 /M:12 /L:E

Some of these lines will differ from your exact configuration. Specifically, the CD-Rom driver line and the SET BLASTER statement. If the application you are setting up does not require a CD you can omit the CD-Rom drivers from both your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. Also, depending on what brand and type of sound card you are using, you may need to load sound card drivers in your CONFIG.SYS and/or AUTOEXEC.BAT.

Once you have completed all of these steps, click the "OK" icon on the "ADVANCED PROGRAM SETTINGS" windows and then the "OK" icon on the "PROPERTIES" window. By clicking "OK", you will save the options you have just specified. To run from your new DOS mode shortcut, double click on the icon. Windows will then automatically reboot into DOS mode, execute the application, and return to Windows 95 upon exiting. If your SHORTCUT does not work properly, double check your SHORTCUT's properties for anything you may have missed.

Problem: I have DOS 6.x and when I select "Play Game" the screen returns me back the main menu.

Solution: Free up more conventional memory by eliminating any unnecessary TSR's or device drivers that may cause a conflict. To do this, reboot your computer by pressing your computer's RESET button or Ctrl-Alt-Del. Wait for the message "Starting MS-DOS..." to appear. When it does, press the [F5] key.

This will cause DOS 6.0 to bypass your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and as a result. your TSR's, memory managers, and other programs which normally occupy main memory will not load.

To begin the game, simply start it up as you normally would.

Problem: I have DOS 5.x and when I select "Play Game" the screen returns me back the main menu.

Solution: Free up more conventional memory by eliminating any unnecessary TSR's or device drivers that may cause a conflict. To do this, you will need to create a "boot disk."

Put a blank disk in your A: drive (Don't do this in your B: drive-it won't work!) and type "FORMAT A: /S" from the command prompt . Wait while your computer formats the disk. When it is complete label the disk "Boot Disk" and keep it handy. You will need this disk whenever you want to start Epic Pinball.

Now, you can reboot your computer and play Epic Pinball:

  1. Put the boot disk in your A: drive.
  2. Restart your computer, either by pressing CTRL-ALT-DELETE, by hitting your reset button, or by turning it on.
  3. Wait while your computer boots from the boot disk.
  4. After a little while, your computer will stop at the A:\> prompt.
  5. Now change to your hard disk by typing "C: <enter>."
  6. Go into the pinball directory by typing "CD \PINBALL <enter>."
  7. Begin by typing "PINBALL <enter>."

Note to owners of "Stacker", "Superstor", and other hard disk compression programs: If your C: drive is compressed and you need a boot disk to start Epic Pinball, you must install Pinball on a different, non-compressed drive. See your Stacker or Superstor manual for instructions on doing this. (This only applies to users of DOS version 5.0 or earlier).

Problem: What can I do about flickering DOT-MATION?

Solution: Try lowering your sound quality in the SETUP. This will help to free up the work load of your processor. Second, select low detail in the options section of the main menu.

Problem: What can I do if my monitor blacks out after a few minutes of play.

Solution: Disable your screen saver and or power saving utilities. There are a number of places where you can configure your computer's power saving features. Be sure to check any TSR's that load when booting and your computers CMOS. If you are running Windows 95/98, be sure to check your control panel.

Problem: Why is Epic Pinball jumpy under Windows 95/98 and what can I do about it?

Solution: Epic Pinball requires total control of the system clock in order to synchronize the game. However, Windows 95 will not permit other programs to have complete control of the system clock and as a result, the video in Epic Pinball may periodically jump. In order to get Epic Pinball to run smoothly on computers with Windows 95, you will need to run from DOS mode. From DOS mode you will get the same performance as you will with previous versions of DOS.

Problem: When running under Windows 3.x I get the message "The KB value required is too large. Decrease PIF."

Solution: This is Windows way of telling you that there is not enough free conventional memory to run Epic Pinball. For best results, we recommend running Epic Pinball from DOS.

Problem: My video is corrupt when I play Epic Pinball.

Solution: One of two things is causing this to occur. Either your monitor or video card does not support Epic Pinball's video mode. Epic Pinball runs in modeX which is a resolution of
320x200x256 colors. More than likely your video card does not support this mode. ModeX is a rather older video mode and many newer cards are being designed with Windows in mind. Since windows does not typically use any resolution less than 640x480 many newer video cards only support commonly used resolutions.

You may want to check with the manufacturer of the video card to see if they have released any updates (hardware or software) for your card. Unfortunately, if your card does not support the video mode used by Epic Pinball it will not be able to display anything on your monitor.

Problem: Why do I hear static on my SB16 or SB Pro II sound card?

Solution: This problem was common with version 1.X of Epic Pinball.  The latest version, 2.1, has native support for the SB16 and it also supports the SB Pro 2.0 standard.

Problem: Why does Epic Pinball stay paused constantly?

Solution: You are most likely running version 1.x and have a joystick connected to your computer. Some computers will pause if you are using an older versions of Epic Pinball and a joystick is connected to the game port. To correct this problem, we recommend upgrading to version 2.1.

Problem: Epic Pinball maxes out my SB's master volume setting, what can I do?

Solution: This was a common problem with version 2.0 of Epic Pinball. If you have v2.0, download the v2.1 patch. Version 2.1 corrects the master volume setting and adds music/sound effects volume controls to the game options.

Problem: My computer locks up as soon as I choose play game, what can I do?

Solution: You are most likely running version 2.0. The sound card reset timing value in v2.0 of Epic Pinball was specific to true Creative Labs Sound Blasters. As a result, there were a number of Sound Blaster clones that would cause Epic Pinball to lockup. The v2.1 patch compensates for this timing conflict and adds support for a wider variety of sound cards. Click HERE to download the v2.1 patch.
